The past 70 years have seen the College work tirelessly to improve patient care, clinical standards and GP training, establishing itself as a leader and advocate for the continued development of the discipline.

To mark this monumental occasion we've put together a free exhibition entitled '70 years of best practice' at our HQ in 30 Euston Square.

📷 Royal Charter - In 1971 the College successfully petitioned Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for the grant of a Royal Charter and this was formally handed over by The Duke of Edinburgh on 1 November 1972 when he was appointed an honorary fellow and elected as president of the College.

📷 Dr John Hunt, Dr John G Walsh and Dame Annis Gillie - Dame Annis Gillie was the sole woman on the College’s original steering committee. She became the first female chair in 1959 and the College’s first female president in 1964. Gillie was awarded an OBE in 1961 for services to medicine and was later promoted to Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1968.

🎨 Dr Mayur Lakhani - In 2004, Dr Mayur Lakhani was elected the first College Chair from an Ethnic Minority Community. In 2017, Dr Lakhani was elected as President of the College, and In 2007 he was awarded a CBE for services to medicine.
