Two Canisius teams made the semifinals and one qualified for the state championships during a terrific Saturday at Scaccia Auditorium as CHS Robotics hosted its annual invitational.

Aidan Billman ’26 of Lockport, Tyler Meredith ’26 of Cheektowaga and Jayden Graham ’26 of Buffalo piloted their robot, 1870E, to the state championships through their semifinal finish at the Canisius High School 2026 VEX V5 Push Back Robotics Competition. The state championships will be held in Syracuse in March. 

The winning teams at the CHS competition were a girls squad from Montreal’s Collège Sainte-Marcelline which is one of the top-ranked teams in the world, as well as a team from Belfast Central High School in Allegany County. The competition included 30 teams from throughout New York State and beyond.

Also reaching the semifinals was the CHS team of Von Kramer ’27 of Alden, Quinn Spurlock ’27 of Clarence Center and Tristan Kolek ’27 of West Seneca.  

The CHS Robotics Club, moderated by teachers Mrs. Emily Friol and Mrs. Karen Nicosia, will also compete at Niagara Falls later this month. 

The Crusaders, who fielded six teams in this past weekend’s competition, have been working every day after school since September, designing, building and coding their robots in preparation for the strategic contests, in which four robots take to an arena at the same time as teams try to earn the most points via various challenges.

In this year’s Push Back competitions, teams gain points by having their robot retrieving objects (red or blue) and placing them strategically in designated holders.
