IE13: Benchmark +
The last event of the 2022 Games. Another revised benchmark, this time starting with a 1000m row that had to be done under 3:15 or you would be eliminated. To be honest I wasn’t really sure how to feel about this one. Coming into this workout I was in a weird headspace. I was in 6th place, but pretty unlikely to move up or down. I tweaked my knee a bit on the last workout so I felt like i just had to survive the thrusters and finish the weekend.
We had a fast turn around between events again so we got to warming up pretty quickly. I’m a pretty good rower so the row pace didn’t bother me much at first, it mostly was just annoying, until I got on a rower…
As the games wear on warm ups usually get shorter and les enthusiastic. Before the last event people are not too keen, so having to ramp up to a high speed row was a bummer and I was finding it hard to get up to speed. We did a few fast I reveals combined with just a few thrusters and that was pretty much it. I didn’t want to stress my knee too much. The ceiling in the back was too low for bar muscle ups so everyone would just be winging those.
We were briefed that we’d have the average split displayed on our rowers to keep an eye on finishing below the required row time, but the first heat came off the floor and told us that they didn’t 😂.
I wasn’t taking any chances, so on the floor I decided to row about a 1:35/500m split instead of the 1:37.5 that was possible. Mercifully it felt better on the floor.
Its weird being on the floor of the coliseum in a rower for that long. Lots of time to take in the environment!
Everyone got off the row about the same time and I have some confidence in my bar muscle ups so I decided I would have to be aggressive on the thrusters and try not to overuse my arms so I’d be ready for the rig. Spoiler: I blew that.
My legs had not been recovering well all weekend and I ended up using a little too much arms on the row and last coule sets of thrusters. Getting to the rig I opened with a set of 12, planning to do 12/8 then go for it on the last bar but j was reduced to small sets to avoid failure.
