IE10: Too Strong
I was really excited about this event when it came up. I’ve been hoping for a more atypical strength test for a couple of years now, it’s just a little more fun and less predictable. I was actually really hoping for atlas stones just because I think they’re cool and I thought it would be a good fit for the spotlight style event. This was pretty close!
What made it fun and a bit stressful is that no one really knew who would be good. After the announcement we got a crash course from a strong man and then everybody got on YouTube to study the hot tips.
When we got into the dungeon warm up area below the coliseum they were a few different bags up to about 300lbs. Our opening load was 240lbs. Most guys hit warmed up slow then hit some bags around 230ish and took a few stabs at 260. I lapped the 300 and only one athlete actually put it to shoulder in the back.
Things were pretty sloppy in the back and lots of athletes were struggling a bit with the weight. My coach told me that the women were the same, but clearly there was some magic on the floor because they all looked strong out there. Turns out she was right.
When we got out there it felt like bag after bag we were waiting for some people to drop out but everyone kept hanging in! It was about the 300lbs bag before we lost more than a couple of men. Everyone looked way better than warm ups.
I generally am not rooting against people, but after the 300 I remember sitting on the bench with Saxon with my right ear burning from the bag and hoping a few more dudes would just drop out before I get cauliflower ear.
Since I lifted first I always had a fresh bag and had to tip it over and start everyone off then got to just watch and wait. It was strange to watch the difference between athletes. Some guys looked like they were only the verge of failing, but somehow held on for like 5 more lifts, and some guys looked smooth and easy until suddenly they good stopped in their tracks.
