IE9: Don’t Panic!
This was another interval event, but it had an opposite ratio than we usually see. 2 minute work windows with 4 minute rest. For us that meant that you’d be almost fully rested for each round and so it would have to be a full sprint effort on each of the 3 rounds with very little room for mistakes. The workout rewarded a weird combo of reckless but precise movement.
This created an interesting pressure situation for the workout. You had to sprint, but any mistake or no rep would cost very precious seconds and could cause a major slide down the leaderboard. It really was a stress management workout, especially with movements like wall balls that are hard to speed up.
The plan for me was pretty simple. No misses reps, touch and go snatches, full sprint transitions. I don’t have the fastest wall balls but that’s something to work on for later, right now just be sure they all count. I did manage to do that and solidify another top 10 finish. Increasing cycle speed has always been something i need to work on and in a workout like this when everyone is well rested it really mattered and exposed me.
There were a couple of cool aspects of this workout. One was that the work/rest periods were managed so that everyone was on the field at a time. You basically had a “buddy” you shared your lane with. I was paired with @jaycrouch_ and as he took his shirt off to start the workout I tried to yell at him to put it back on so he wouldn’t make our wall ball slippery with his sweat for our team, but he didn’t hear me 😂.
The other was the 12’ wall ball shots. I practice a fair amount to 11 so I was ok with this, but with a sprint in its hard to set your feet right away and in a high stakes event it’s stressful. You know when the ball leaves your hands if it might not hit the target, and when it’s 12’ that’s a long time to regret that toss 😂. All mine hit but there were a couple grazers that made me real nervous.
Walking off the field after the event I was next to @colten_mertens and he looked at me and deadpan says “now you guys know how wall balls feel for me”. He’s not wrong. Except normally we’re doing over 100. Guy is a soldier.
