IE2A/B: The Rockiest of Bottoms
This event got delayed to the Thursday due to a rain storm. There was word that they may change it to be strict press Instead of the heavy shoulder to overhead but they opted for this instead. As annoying as it is to have schedule changes and lose a day off, it was the right call for safety. Nobody is here for 300lbs split jerks on a wet platform…
We had opening ceremonies first, so a nice little warm up standing in the sun 🥵
The way this event was scored the run was very valuable. It was 100 points PLUS it was the tie breaker for the shoulder to overhead reps. In a big tie situation it could be worth as much as 120 points. Jerks aren’t my most confident weightlifting movement, but it was Too much to ignore.
We made the decision to go after the run and have some confidence I would be able to weather the storm on the jerks. I wasn’t.
My legs were heavy from the day before and the run took more out of me than I thought it would. Right from the start my movement on the jerk wasn’t sharp. I missed my first rep.
This kind of workout you have to get into a rhythm on the barbell. Make it routine. I was just not able to do that. Every miss you panic just a little and get out of your groove for the next one. In the second round I think I missed 4 or 5 jerks and only hit 1. I could feel the walls closing in. I had switched from push jerks to split but it was just off. It was very frustrating, but now I clearly had do go after the run.
I did a hard 800 and was able to take 4th overall on the run but failed to hit any jerks in the last round and took a 35th.
This was the most painful finish I’ve ever had at the games. It’s one thing to struggle at things you’re bad at, but there was no excuse for this. It was simple lack of composure.
After a 20th on the bike and a 35th here I was quite certain I wouldn’t be able to win the games after that event. It stung a lot. I took 10 minutes to vent and feel sorry for myself with my coach before moving on. Hell of a “day off”.
At least I could look forward to some odd object work the next morning in the capitol workout. Some stuff I’m traditionally good at. Boy was I in for a rude surprise…
