With rising rents and increasing crime rates, the resiliency of Portland’s whimsically weird image has been put to the test in recent years.

In response, Portland’s Sleestak – the costumed lizard creature based on a character from “Land of the Lost” – gathered dozens of his friends last fall to create a short film showing that the city’s “weird” community is still here and ready to have fun.

The resulting 10-minute “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” parody features the Portland Elvis, Una the Mermaid, the Unipiper, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and many more of the city’s colorful characters, who will gather this Saturday to watch the film’s premiere.
