Artist John Singer Sargent was #BornOnThisDay in 1856!

Though best known for his portraits, Sargent’s work extended far beyond that genre. Among his most striking creations are the cityscapes and interiors of Venice. Venetian Interior, painted around 1882, is one of the most beautiful pictures of its type by Sargent.

Inside a cool, shadowed palazzo, light filters through from outside, patchworking the space. Six women and a child string beads, stroll through the hall, and quietly rest or watch passersby from the window. This is more than a casual glimpse of Venetian life. Sargent treats the nearest figure as if she were the subject of a portrait—her gaze meets the viewer with a look of surprise, as though catching a voyeur in the act.

The dusky palette, dramatic shadows, and expressive brushwork recall the old masters, yet Sargent’s painting is concurrent with the light-struck manner of Impressionism. The artist’s love of pigment finds expression in the loose, confident motions that sculpt form from light.
