If you’re in the Southeast of Victoria, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Senior Constable Tom Walton. Maybe at a community event, maybe out on patrol for a chat or maybe in your local Eyewatch comments (yes, he reads them, and yes, he knows).⁣

For Tom, community is the job.⁣
⁣
“Helping to improve my community felt like it would be a rewarding career.”⁣
⁣
Across his career, he’s worn more hats than he can count - working at Cranbourne, Pakenham, Emerald and Dandenong, jumping between the Criminal Investigation Unit and the Frontline Tactical Unit, picking up experience (and stories) from every corner of policing.⁣
⁣
Now, Tom is the Community Engagement Coordinator for the Cardinia area, which basically means that if it matters to the community, it matters to him. He spends his days talking with councils, local businesses, community groups and residents. Listening to concerns, unpacking safety perceptions, and working together to find real solutions to local issues.⁣
⁣
“Cardinia is a hugely diverse area - residential, industrial, forest and farming. Every part has its own challenges.”⁣
⁣
And while he’s honed skills like staying calm in high-pressure situations and taking control when things get messy, he’d tell you community work is just as important as enforcement. It’s how trust is built, and how problems get solved before they escalate.⁣
