South Korea’s special prosecutor just asked for the death penalty for former President Yoon Suk-yeol — over a martial law case.

Why?
They claim Yoon illegally declared martial law even though there was no real national emergency, then used the military and police to try to grab power.

They accuse him of trying to:
- Block the National Assembly from voting it down
- Send armed troops into parliament and the election commission
- Detain key political figures and officials

Basically, they argue he tried to override the constitution and take control of the country by force, all to hold onto power.

The special prosecutor called it a direct attack on democracy, saying it caused nationwide fear, political chaos, and damage to Korea’s economy and global trust.

They also said Yoon has shown no remorse, which is why they went straight for the harshest possible sentence.

But there’s another side to this.

Some argue that declaring martial law is technically a constitutional power of the president, so even if the decision was wrong, that doesn’t automatically make it insurrection.

They also point out that:
- There was no bloodshed, no armed clashes, and no civil war
- Parliament successfully voted to lift the martial law
- The government and constitution never collapsed

Because the country was never actually overthrown, they say seeking the death penalty is way too extreme.

So now the real question is:
Is this justice for attacking democracy — or punishment that goes too far?
