Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan Becomes First Indian Samurai Outside Japan

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has achieved a rare international honour in martial arts, with formal induction into Kenjutsu, the ancient Japanese swordsmanship tradition, making him the first Indian to be accepted into the Samurai community outside Japan. The distinction, widely reported across major news outlets, recognises Kalyan’s decades-long commitment to traditional martial disciplines and his global standing in the art form.

Kalyan, who is also a lifelong martial arts enthusiast, was awarded the Fifth Dan (5th Dan) by the respected Japanese body Sogo Budo Kanri Kai, a high-level ranking rarely conferred on non-Japanese practitioners. In addition, he became the first Telugu-speaking individual inducted into the Takeda Shingen Clan under the lineage of Soke Muramatsu Sensei, a distinction that underscores his deep study and practice of Samurai-linked combat techniques. He was also honoured with the title “Tiger of Martial Arts” by the Golden Dragons organisation. 

Kalyan’s journey in martial arts spans more than 30 years and traces back to his early training in karate and related disciplines. His pursuit extended beyond physical fighting skills to encompass the philosophy and discipline central to Samurai tradition, studied under noted martial arts authority Hanshi Professor Dr. Siddiq Mahmoodi. Kalyan’s expertise has also been showcased in several of his popular films, where authentic combat and discipline play a key role. 

Recognised both for his work in public life and cinema, this induction into a traditional Japanese martial arts lineage places Pawan Kalyan among a select group of Indians with global acclaim in Samurai heritage. The achievement highlights not only his personal discipline and dedication but also bridges cultural exchanges between India and the classical martial arts community abroad
