The National Weather Service's hazardous weather outlook warns of wind, snow and extended low temperatures for the days ahead in Iowa. In response, Polk County will activate its extreme temperature plan.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, the extreme temperature plan will be activated with the current forecast calling for a dip in temperature through at least Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The several days of continued cold — with wind chill as low as 4 degrees below zero — call for activation of the Polk County extreme temperature plan that will open warming shelters across the metro.

A full list of available warming centers can be found on the Polk County website. The county recommends calling ahead to check for availability.
