Cleveland got its first taste of virtual reality immersive gameplay in March 2022 when the technology strutted into Boss VR Arena featuring Zero Latency Technology. But VR isn’t just for gamers, adrenaline junkies or high-tech enthusiasts. Whether Clevelanders realize it, their city is literally inventing the future.

In December 2014, Case Western Reserve University’s Interactive Commons director Dr. Mark Griswold made a trip to Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington. The result would revolutionize how anatomy—and art, engineering and music—are taught. 🧑‍🏫
 
Dr. Jay Alberts, vice chair of innovation at the Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute, is using VR to record the physical response of older patients to simulated tasks. The data could in turn be used to monitor the progression of Parkinson’s disease. 🩺

Dr. Deven Reddy, a MetroHealth neurosurgeon, also uses VR, but to rehearse complicated and rare surgeries. Donning an Oculus lens and taking up controllers, he can maneuver a virtual skull mapped from a patient’s actual 2D CT or MRI scan. ⚕️

And, in 2021, the Cleveland Museum of Art used the technology to take guests back in time to a temple housed inside Cambodia’s mountain, Phnoma Da. ⛰️
