✨ Story behind the photo ✨ I really like this song (being a native Texas girl myself) and it’s having a moment on the Billboard Hot 100 chart so I thought this might be fun.

I shot with my 400mm lens most of the show, but for special moments like this, I pulled out the 70-200mm for a more overall view. The couple dancing on the center stage in front of the main stage made it challenging to capture a closeup/portrait shot of Ella because they were moving really quickly and most of the time covering her up from my vantage point.

After spending half the song failing to capture anything good, I knew I had to switch gears and be more intentional and patient to hopefully capture something. So, I put down the Canon 5D Mark IV w/400mm and grabbed my Canon 5D Mark III w/ 70-200mm and framed and waited with my shutter button halfway pushed in. Once they were finally dancing for a split second just to the left of Ella I pulled the trigger on the shutter for as many frames as I could capture in that moment, and chose to use this one with the cowboy hat clearly outlined and her hair flipping in the yellow light. The shutter speed was fast enough to freeze the motion of the Ella and the band, but allowed a soft motion blur from the dancers. I also loved the way the crowd was subtly lit in blue light.

In hindsight I would have tried more to get the drums to the far right (not fully pictured) shown to add a little more to the frame and center it a little better. But it still became one of my personal favorites from the show!
