The "Strong Black Woman" Stereotype

In honor of Black history month, we're highlighting a prevalent, long-standing stereotype in our society that perpetuates violence against Black women and promotes shame around the idea of seeking help; this stereotype is known as the "Strong Black Woman."

Black women ✨are✨ strong. While they are strong, they shouldn't have to feel like they can't seek support.

The stereotype is that specifically Black women are strong enough to endure abuse without needing extra support, and we're here to tell you this does not have to be the story.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, more than 40% of Black women have experienced intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. And more than half of Black adult female homicides are related to intimate partner violence.

The truth is, historically, we as a nation have failed to provide a safe space for Black women to seek assistance. Let us not forget it is our responsibility to provide accessible resources and safe spaces of support for all.

There is strength in seeking support. We're here to remind you of that today.

Be empowered to do what's best for you and seek the healing you deserve. Our staff is ready 24/7 to come alongside you and remind you of the strength and courage in reaching out.
