## Caption

These two images taken by NASAHubble may look different, but they are of the same star cluster named NGC 1850. It is 100 million years old and located within our own Milky Way galaxy at 160,000 light-years away from Earth.

Just like there are multiple types of galaxies, there are multiple types of star clusters. The one you’re looking at here is called a globular cluster, which is a large, dense collection of stars (anywhere from several thousand to millions) all created from a shared nebula. NGC 1850 is about 63,000 times the mass of our Sun, and its core is roughly 20 light-years in diameter.

The two images are different colors because they were taken with different filters to capture different ranges of light emitted from NGC 1850: the blue image includes near-infrared and visible light (what our eyes can see), and the red image includes the range of light from near-ultraviolet to the beginning of infrared.

Image descriptions:

1. A multicolor starfield covers the image, like glitter, focusing its density within the right portion of the scene. A rusty red plume of gas and dust appears behind the stars. 2. Tangled wisps of glowing blue cross over the image like plumes of smoke. Amongst them are a collection of stars—dense points of warm light that look like distant candles. The stars are numerous throughout the image, but the most crowded collection is in the upper middle section. Credit: NASA, ESA, and P. Goudfrooij (Space Telescope Science Institute); Processing: Gladys Kober (NASA/Catholic University of America)
