Matt Spirio ‘23 is a Sports Communications Major with Double Minors in Math and Data Analytics; he combines his love of sports and proficiency with math.

“I’ve always enjoyed numbers! Sports was always my true love, but there are so many numbers in sports,” he said.

Last summer, the senior interned with the popular sports betting company Fanduel, and he really enjoyed it. Spirio believes that sports betting is an increasingly popular field, since it allows fans to get involved in ways they haven’t been able to before. He stated, “Sports betting has become so big, honestly, it’s one of the fastest growing businesses in the entire country, and it’s all rooted in numbers and analytics, so I think that’s the route that I kind of want to go with right now. I think sports betting is only going to rise more.”

While his background has that analytics experience, recently, Spirio has been delving into the world of production, and loves it. Thanks to help from an advisor, Spiro is part of a team that creates a Marist Halftime show for ESPN; “We get students to make highlights of Marist sports, we have four guys who voice those over, and we put a whole show together. We have music over it, a bunch of different cuts, a whole staff that works on it and comes into the studio all the time. It’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve done in my entire life. I feel like it’s my child! I’ve seen it come from a little idea we had over the summer into something great.”

After graduation, Spirio hopes to find something that combines his love for data analytics and sports; “Whatever I end up doing, whether it is mainly production or mainly analytics, I’d want to do the other on the side. I want to find a way to bridge that gap between production and analytics, it’s an ambitious dream.”
