Freshman Darius Acuff Jr. delivered a breakout performance Saturday, scoring a career-high 29 points to lead No. 18 Arkansas past No. 19 Tennessee, 86–75, in the SEC opener for both teams.

The game swung midway through the second half, when Arkansas put together a decisive 18–5 run over a 6:37 stretch. Trailing by five, the Razorbacks flipped the momentum behind defensive pressure and repeated trips to the free-throw line, turning the deficit into an eight-point advantage with 5:40 remaining. During that span, Tennessee went cold, shooting just 2-for-10 and missing eight consecutive shots.

The Volunteers responded once Arkansas’ shooting cooled, trimming the lead to two with under four minutes left. But Acuff answered at the biggest moment, burying a wing three with 2:09 to play to push the margin back to double digits and steady the Razorbacks down the stretch.

Arkansas sealed the win at the foul line, shooting 29-for-33 compared to Tennessee’s 12-for-23. Acuff was the lone Razorback to shoot better than 50% from the field, finishing 9-for-16, while Meleek Thomas added 18 points. Malique Ewin (12) and Karter Knox (11) rounded out a balanced scoring effort.

Tennessee shot 49% overall and placed three players in double figures, led by Amari Evans’ 17 points on a perfect 7-for-7 night. Still, the Volunteers couldn’t overcome Arkansas’ second-half surge and free-throw advantage.

The victory marked Arkansas’ first SEC-opening win since the 2020–21 season, continuing a strong recent run for a program that has reached four Sweet 16s and two Elite Eights over the past five years.
