This week marks one year since Georgian authorities arrested award-winning journalist Mzia Amaglobeli. 

They made her watch her trial from inside a glass cage. They blocked important defense evidence. High-level officials made prejudicial statements about her. Then the court reclassified the charges against her on judgment day, providing her no opportunity to defend against them.

Our new #TrialWatch Fairness Report—prepared with Covington & Burling LLP—exposes how Georgian authorities violated fair trial standards time and time again in this trial. They sought to make an example of the co-founder of batumelebi.ge and netgazeti in order to deter other critical voices from speaking out. 

Her conviction cannot stand. As Georgia’s authoritarian shift deepens, we urge authorities to stop this abuse of process, uphold press freedom and the rule of law, and #FreeMzia.
