After months of bargaining for a renewal of its contract with the UC system, United Auto Workers Local 4811, or UAW 4811, the union that represents GSIs on campus, among other student employees, has announced a strike authorization vote. 

UAW 4811 represents 48,000 workers across the UC system, including teaching assistants, tutors, readers, graduate student researchers and postdocs. It alleges repeated unfair labor practice, or ULP, violations and bad faith negotiation on behalf of the UC system. The union’s contract expires Jan. 31. 

The voting window will run from Feb. 5 through Feb. 13. If the vote achieves a two-thirds majority, it will authorize union leadership to call a strike “if circumstances justify,” though it will not necessarily immediately induce a strike.
