## Caption

On January 16, 1852, the third session of the California State Legislature relocated to Sacramento from Vallejo. The session convened at the new State Capitol building in the city of Vallejo for 12 days until it was found that accommodations at the new building were not ready yet. Upon relocation, the Legislature agreed to keep the permanent capital at Vallejo but finished the session in Sacramento. The Legislature convened in the Sacramento County Courthouse building at I and 7th Streets. 

The next session in 1853 reconvened in Vallejo for a short time before moving to Benicia at the new State Capitol built there. Even the Benicia State Capitol could not meet the accommodations needed for the growing state government. The City of Sacramento soon offered, for free use, the County Courthouse as a formal capitol building.  Sacramento became the permanent capital of California on February 25, 1854.
