The Serengeti does not care about your shot list. One minute it’s gold, the next it’s a wall of rain.

Tom Walker captured these frames while filming ‘Cheetahs Up Close with Bertie Gregory (@bertiegregory)’ leaning on compact power in rough conditions. Most frames here were shot on RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 paired with the Canon CN20, built small enough to fly inside GSS’s 512EX, with full camera control on the move via the RED Control app.

From stormy sunsets to four-week-old cubs in backlight, this is what “stay ready” looks like.

Notes from Tom:

Storm Truck: A storm hits at sunset in the Serengeti whilst filming ‘Cheetahs Up Close with Bertie Gregory.’ One of the aims for the film was to shoot more in heavy rain, so I used a Rain Spinner on the GSS 512EX to enable us to keep shooting in any weather.

Sunset Cheetah Close Up: A male cheetah watches distant egrets at sunset, contemplating his next move. I love to shoot cheetah silhouettes against the low sun in the Serengeti. The V-RAPTOR’s dynamic range and clean image help achieve this.

Sunset Cheetahs Wide: The male coalition that we followed for Cheetahs Up Close at sunset, after an afternoon of unsuccessful hunting. Males will often form coalitions with their brothers to increase their chances of defending territory against rivals.
