🗣“The Koppenberg was always there when I was racing. It was difficult as we didn’t have the gearing that they have now, so we had to grind our way up there. I think I walked and ran up it more times in my career than I cycled. Back in my day, we had guys that had to walk up and then still went on to win the race” (Sean Kelly).⁣
⁣
Known for its cobbled sectors and brutal climbs, the Tour of Flanders is one of the most savage one-day races on the calendar, and this year’s parkour is no different. 267km of racing, 22 cobbled sectors, the Muur, Kwaremont, Paterberg and Koppenberg all rolled into one. 🏁🇧🇪 ⁣
⁣
We caught up with Vitus ambassador, and Irish cycling legend, @seankelly.cc, to get his thoughts Sunday's race.⁣
⁣
Sean’s favourites for the race:⁣
⁣
"It’s hard to look past the big three of Mathieu van der Poel, Julian Alaphilippe and Wout van Aert. However, the good weather conditions that are forecast will have an impact, there will be a lot of riders in the mix that could change the outcome of the race.⁣
⁣
Outside of these three, Mads Pedersen and Jasper Stuyven from Trek are the ones to watch. Pedersen hasn’t done much racing recently but is a strong rider, and Stuyven is capable of hitting out in a breakaway from 60km. Dylan van Baarle from Ineos is also in super shape after winning Dwars door Vlaanderen from a 50km solo attack. ⁣
⁣
Quick-Step will likely use their numbers and get guys up the road early on. Kasper Asgreen always looks dangerous and strong so is also more than capable of riding away and going it alone. "⁣
⁣
Who’s the underdog: ⁣
⁣
Stefan Kung is riding well for FDJ at the moment and could potentially take advantage of teams being disorganised to hang in and take the win. Nowadays riders are so strong that they can win with a lone break from 50km/60km out, especially with the good weather.⁣
⁣
Where the attacks will come:⁣
⁣
The third time over the Kwaremont is where I think the divisions and splits will come. And obviously, the Paterberg towards the end is where I think the big three favourites will come to life. Only the strongest will survive on the Paterberg.⁣
