“Tunnel vision” versus awareness:

One common lament that I hear from many coaches and goaltender development professionals is that there is a tremendous amount of athletic talent and technical skill with goaltenders, but the ability to read the play is sometimes lacking.

I am posting two clips from tonight’s training session with phcmidget prospect rocketdagoalie. In the first clip, it was his first rep after we explained what the drill is, what the objective of the drill is and what skills we are looking to enhance. In this particular drill, player one skates off the half wall has to tag up at the dot and then spins down for a bad angle drive while player two can release anywhere from behind the net. The reason for the spin is to simulate and being able to identify times where players are not looking at the net, i.e. scrums on the wall or having their back turned to the net. This is an ideal time to get a quick scan of the ice. The scans provide us so much information: proximal distance of any secondary threats, hand of the passing threats, and support on the ice. In clip one, you will notice that Nathan stays completely focused on the puck and, consequently, off of the pass, ends up reaching because he has no idea of where player two has released. The extension with poor weight transfer leaves a lot of net and the subsequent goal. Now, in the second clip, he does exaggerate his shoulder checks, as they cannot be that deliberate and robotic in the game, however, with him getting a read of where the player releases off of the pass, he makes a much better read and his attack route and weight transfer help him fill the net effectively. A few things to know is that this drill is being done in a training arena, so the distances are rather close and player one does have the option of shooting, going below the goal line, or passing. Your skills allow you to execute saves, but your reads allow you to be in position to execute.
