Part 2 #saturdaystorytime - Deal or no deal
Cont.
hogberglukas brought a roll of bubble wrap to sit on. I was I had. Right in front of me too, had to stare at his comfy ass all workout.
I started behind for the first half. We didn’t even pop up on the big screen until we were in the top 20. I basically guessed at my pace so i was anxious for a while but slowly picked off the field in the back half. Machines would show who was directly in front and behind us and how far away. So every new name that popped up i would scan the field to find them and focus on that one person until they were in the rear view.
that worked until I was in 5th. Hogberg and Esslinger were far ahead. I had Gamboa a safeish distance behind me and I could see him. Then Brent in front of me and colesager35 ahead of him. Brent is sitting right next to me. We have about 5km left I believe. We roll in silence for a couple minutes then Brent says “what are we doin here Vellner”, to which I reply “I’m just trying to get out of here”. Brent tells me he’s bee testing Cole out a bit but can’t make up any ground. Cole is also 2 rowers over 😂. I tell Brent I’m totally fine to take 5th, I was already cranking and after that much work I didn’t want to get into a sprint and mess myself up. Brent agrees then yells over his shoulder to Cole “shut it down”. I told the I’d keep an eye on Roy and if he kicks I’ll signal, it otherwise we’ll cruise it in. Which we did. Zero regrets.
I could barely stand up off the rower. AndAfter this I watched some sprint finishes before we figured out we were allowed to leave, and boy was I glad that wasn’t me.
It was a tough walk out of there. I had an ice bath and slowly watched people should up and try to get in. No less than 4 people got ab cramps trying to lower themselves in and would full dunk and have to be rescued. Incredible.
I ate as much as I could that night at the hotel and ran into 321gaux having a glass of wine at the hotel after winning the row for the women. Unfazed. What an absolute legend.
Anyways I’m sure there’s more. I have a vivid memory of this ever, because of the trauma. If we ever cross paths I’ll tell you all about it.
