It really pains me to see the US fall so far behind. ☀️⚡️

Ever since my days as a young engineer, I’ve been told to root for the US. To buy American. Unfortunately, the American energy and solar industry is floundering or barely there – especially in the consumer market segment. All the momentum is from the East, particularly from Shenzhen. 

President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill dramatically accelerates the elimination of tax credits for renewable energy. The Chinese government, on the other hand, has gone all-in on solar, battery, wind, and hydroelectric technologies. 

Simultaneously, LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery production has gone from a modest market share in 2010 to around 94% of global capacity. As a result, Chinese manufacturers, such as BYD and CATL, have risen to international dominance.

What we have are two countries with very different priorities. On our side, it’s “drill, baby, drill.” China, meanwhile, has nearly 650 gigawatts of installed solar capacity and adds more solar energy each year than the rest of the world combined. 

The question I took with me to CES was this: can 2026's portable and solar technologies help address this downward trend in US energy alternatives? The answer was both disheartening and hopeful.
