“Water came in like 8, 9, 10 inches over a period of, maybe, 16-17 hours. [My home] was severely flooded. Water was coming through my basement window and up under my back porch steps. It ruined everything.”

Last year, military veteran Larry Burnett was one of the many people who experienced severe flooding in St. Louis, Missouri. The area was hit with record rainfall and flash floods, leaving people’s homes and businesses submerged in up to 10 feet or more of water.

For several weeks, Red Cross disaster teams worked around the clock to provide people with a safe place to stay, replace their lost and damaged medication, and even deliver food and relief supplies by boat to areas cut off due to damaged roads and bridges. 

In addition, people who qualified were provided recovery support in the form of financial assistance, like Larry. “I was able to get a hot water tank with the assistance the Red Cross provided. They helped me get a new one.”

Larry is no stranger to these types of unexpected disasters. The last time he experienced something like this was in 1993. His story is similar to many others who continue to be impacted by the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-driven disasters across the country.
