## Caption

Built in 1943, Tillamook’s remaining World War II blimp hangar is one of the largest free-standing wooden structures ever built — a Douglas fir giant that once housed Navy airships patrolling the West Coast. After a December windstorm tore a 200-foot section from its roof, the 83-year-old hangar is now closed, exposed to the elements and facing an uncertain future. Officials say without major funding soon, this iconic wartime landmark — and former home of the Tillamook Air Museum — could be lost.
