Photos by amivitale | Five years ago today, Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on the planet, passed away next to keeper Joseph Wachira. I think back often on those final moments and it is the silence that I remember most—a haunting silence that seemed to foreshadow what a world without wildlife would be like.

Remarkably, there is still hope for the northern white rhino. Today, a multidisciplinary team of scientists spanning five continents has turned to an innovative mix of classic reproduction techniques and cutting-edge stem cell technology in the hope of resurrecting the subspecies. Thanks to the groundbreaking and inspiring work of the BioRescue_Project, 24 northern white rhino embryos are ready to be transferred into a surrogate southern white rhino mother in the near future. The species might still be saved from extinction.

I've just launched a short film, "Remembering Sudan," documenting the heartbreaking crisis facing the northern white rhinos and those who sacrifice so much to protect them.

Watch the short film and learn more about this incredible story at rememberingsudan.org and by following amivitale olpejeta biorescue_project and vital.impacts.
