I was lucky today. 

As I walked through the desert looking left and right for those in distress and the deceased I just happened to look down and spotted this beautiful but deadly animal. It's early spring and it was sunning itself in the open desert. I stopped just 3 feet from stepping directly on it. 

I wasn't wearing the snake guards that we have back at the Battalion HQ in Ajo Arizona. It was so cool this morning I thought there was no need for them. It would have ripped through my hiking pants with no effort. 

Miles and miles from any emergency services and no cell phone coverage would have meant a challenging effort of survival. 

Migrants die by the thousands along our border every year. They die in silence and in secret by design. Our policies combined with the weaponized remote borderlands kill, conceal and erase the evidence. Envenomation is only one of the many causes of death migrants face in these areas.

Imagine sleeping on the ground, hiking at night, being pursued as you are only trying to seek safety and a better life. And then you suffer an injury or a bite and can't continue. 

Cartel guides called "Coyotes" have no interest in sharing your location with any emergency services. You are left behind like so many have been before and will continue to be.

Your death will be slow, painful and drawn out. This is the human suffering that our deterrence policies inflict upon some of the most vulnerable among us.

We are the Battalion Search and Rescue and we search for the lost but not forgotten.
