In the final day of our search with the Jesuits in the desert west of El Paso, after locating two more sites with human remains — one clearly a woman, her hair still tangled with extensions and a black tie half-buried in the sand — we paused.
We stopped, not to search, but to pray.
At a quiet, protected place in the desert stands a small memorial for a young traveler who died here a few short years ago. Their family asked that it be made. Friends with Parallel 31 answered. A monument was placed at the site where the body was found, so they would not vanish without witness. 🤍
Thirteen Jesuit priests and seminarians stood together and sang Salve Regina — voices rising in perfect harmony over the desert that has taken so many.
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
A prayer for the lost. A prayer for the living. A prayer for those still waiting to be found.
The blessing was led by Jaret Ornelas, a longtime Battalion searcher and Jesuit seminarian, wearing his original Battalion shirt. Holy water touched the stone. Then each of us.
We prayed for the women and girls who have died in this corridor — more than 100 in the last two years alone.
We prayed for their families and communities, who wait for answers that may never come.
And we prayed — painfully, deliberately — for those who refuse to come.
In this county, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator have repeatedly refused calls for service reporting human remains — including women.
Five known sites still lie unrecovered after more than 15 months. Some reported multiple times.
Here, in one of the wealthiest countries on earth, the dead are left to be erased by sun, animals, and time.
Not because they are unknown — but because they are deemed unworthy.
So we sang.
We blessed the stone and the ground around us.
We remembered their name even when the state would not.
And we prayed — for mercy, for accountability, and for the courage to love our neighbors as we claim to believe. ✝️🕯️
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.
