This Thanksgiving, let’s talk about the truth they didn’t teach us in school. 💔 The story of the “First Thanksgiving” is a carefully constructed myth, sanitizing a brutal history of colonization, violence, and cultural erasure.

The Myth of “Terra Nullius”: This was not an empty land awaiting European “discovery.” It was the vibrant, thriving home of tens of thousands of Indigenous peoples, including the Wampanoag nation, the “People of the First Light.”

The Myth of European Superiority: The settlers were desperate, starving, and would not have survived without the compassion, knowledge, and support of Indigenous communities like the Wampanoag, especially figures like Tisquantum and Massasoit.

The Myth of the Shared Feast: The iconic “Thanksgiving dinner” was not a harmonious invitation. It was a chaotic encounter after the Separatists fired muskets, drawing 90 Wampanoag men to investigate. Indigenous peoples had their own ceremonies of thanks long before European arrival.

The Myth of Peaceful Coexistence: The brief peace treaty was swiftly followed by massacres, enslavement, and relentless land theft. The Mystic River Massacre of 1637, where nearly 900 Pequot people were slaughtered and burned alive, is a chilling reminder of the violence that paved the way for “days of thanks.” The brutal killing and desecration of Metacom (King Philip), Massasoit’s son, underscores the true nature of these early interactions.
