Yes I finally wrote this.
Not a call-out.
Not a takedown.
Not a list of names.
A warning.
For years, I’ve watched something deeply corrosive inside the so-called humanitarian world—especially in the borderlands. Gatekeeping. Elitism. Silence. Tone policing. Organizations with deep pockets offering no mentoring, no partnership, no support, while smaller frontline groups struggle for gas money and are then scolded for how they speak, share, or survive.
This piece isn’t about one interaction.
It’s about a pattern.
A pattern that quietly drives good people away.
A pattern that protects institutions instead of the missing.
A pattern that harms volunteers, frontline workers, and families waiting for answers.
I didn’t come into this work naïve. I had already been doing search and recovery for years when we started Battalion Search and Rescue. What shocked me—immediately—was not the desert, the deaths, or the toll of the work.
It was the behavior of other “humanitarians.”
Coldness instead of solidarity.
Scolding instead of support.
Power without accountability.
This has broken people. It nearly broke me.
I’m sharing this not out of bitterness, but out of responsibility. If you’re entering this work, or supporting it, or funding it—you deserve to know how these dynamics operate. Silence protects kingdoms. Speaking protects people.

If this resonates, share it.
If you’ve lived it, you’re not alone.
If you disagree, read it anyway.
There is no “right time” to talk about this.
There is only now.
