[SAVE + SHARE] *Traveling full-time is cheaper for us than living in the USA* 🤯😬So many people have asked how we’ve afforded to travel full-time (we traveled for 18 months in 2021-2022 and are now on a 2-month trip in Asia) but the truth is that it’s been cheaper than our life in NYC and Miami!

Let’s talk numbers and use New York City as an example. With the average monthly rent in Manhattan hovering at around $4100 USD (for a 1 bedroom 😳) and monthly childcare costs totaling anywhere from $1750 to $2800, living in The Big Apple can be insanely expensive if you a) don’t want roommates and b) have dependents. While we enjoyed our 5 years in the city, we also loved the idea of being able to travel the world full-time for far less money. 😊

Most months our total travel expenses come out to less than half of what we paid for our apartment in New York City (we used to live in a neighborhood called Long Island City, which is in Queens, just north of trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn).

Where possible, we keep our travel expenses low(er) by: 

✌🏾renting apartments vs staying in hotels
✌🏾buying groceries vs eating out all the time
✌🏾traveling in the off-season/ off-peak
✌🏾using points/rewards programs to score discounts and free stays.

We also, and this is a big one, try to travel to where our money will STRETCH FARTHER. We LOVE a good deal, so that means spending time in places like Southeast Asia (we just spent a month in Thailand and currently are finishing up 3 weeks in Bali) and avoiding super expensive destinations (like Norway 😅) for now.

Anyway, I’m curious, what is the cost of living 💵where you live/are from? Every time I go home to Toronto, I’m appalled by how expensive food, transportation, and accommodations are— it’s not NYC prices, but getting there.👀
