Since Baru was on a fixed income and homebound, the program purchased and delivered cat food, litter and treats. Baru had a unique background in that as a young boy, he and his immigrant parents were held in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Even so, he enlisted in the US Army as a young man and served in combat, he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received while serving. A few months ago, Baru communicated that he felt he needed to find a new home for Kats because he was sensing that the end of his life was near. The Pet Program’s director started the research on how to find someone who would be willing to adopt a ornery cat who usually took months to even tolerate someone new. A month later Baru died in his sleep with Katsu by his side and the task became urgent. After interviewing 3 people who’s situations were not ideal for a cat who was grieving and confused, we introduced Katsu to Ashley, a young woman who couldn’t have been more unlike Baru. She did however, know exactly when and how to engage Kats and when to back off and give him space. The Pet Program paid for one last vet check and took Katsu to his new home. Ashley sends updates on their progress and recently sent a video of Katsu purring while getting a vigorous head and neck rub. Since no one had ever seen anyone but Baru even touch Kats, it was a momentous occasion. The mission of the MOWW Pet Program is "keeping people and pets together” and in this case the mission to care for the pet did not end upon Baru’s death.
