The Abject Mölly | Critique 3 | “Mölly’s Room”
-
Mixed Media Installation
-
This work serves as a site-specific manifestation of a space previously held only in the artist’s mind: the bedroom of Mölly. Mölly is the “mystery twin” the artist felt they integrated in the womb—the identity they would have carried if assigned female at birth. After twenty-three years of suppression, this installation acts as an externalization of that internal architecture.
-
Rooted in a “messthetic” of camp, kitsch, and low-brow excess, the work rejects institutional poise to embrace the chaos of nonbinary identity. By translating this private, mental room into a physical vessel, the artist explores the relationship between drag, familial fabulation, and the body. Mölly is not just a character, but an alter ego synonymous with the self—finally released from the cracked mirror of the subconscious and invited to take over.
-
Thank you to my cohort and fellow MFAs, Stamps MFA faculty/advisors, visiting critic Andrea Cardinal, Institute for Humanities artist in residence, Kaolki Nyamai for the Behind the Studios lunch/presentation, and Mölly herself who could not join us yesterday (she was in Traverse City for a bowling convention) but cleaned up her room enough for us to partake and critique it.
-
Looking forward to what is next for this project and for the final critique of year 1 of the MFA!
-
Endless love,
~William
