Before #ASAPMob became a cultural movement, #ASAPYams was already shaping taste online. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of rap and an instinct for where the next wave was headed. His now-legendary 'realn***atumblr' is where he first built a following, sharing a curated mix of music, images, and rap history with other enthusiasts. In 2011, Yams posted a music video from a rapper he’d been working with behind the scenes. That video went viral—introducing the world to #ASAPRocky through “Purple Swag,” at a time when the industry hadn’t yet caught up to the power of internet virality. From there, everything accelerated. Yams was deeply involved in both the music and business side of Rocky’s early career. 'Live.Love.A$AP' led to Rocky’s reported $3M RCA deal and laid the foundation for A$AP Mob. Yams once described their dynamic as: “Rocky’s like Luke Skywalker—and I’m Yoda.” Often called a tastemaker and visionary, Yams had a rare ability to spot talent before the world caught on—championing artists like Vince Staples, #ChancetheRapper, and #LilUziVert early. In 2016, Uzi reflected on Yams, saying, “I never got to meet him in person, but he was the first person that hit me up. Yams knew about all the new music… a genius.” Today marks 11 years since Yams’ passing, but his legacy lives on—through the artists he championed, the culture he helped shape, and the blueprint he left behind for every aspiring tastemaker. Rest in peace, A$AP Yams 🙏
