The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is a global leader in combatting wildlife crime.

Our wildlife inspectors seized an endangered subadult jaguar skin at the Port of Cincinnati, Ohio, with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The shipment, falsely labeled as a “handmade blanket,” was transiting the U.S. from Mexico to the United Kingdom in violation of multiple wildlife protection laws.

Jaguars are protected under the strictest provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA), both of which restrict commercial trade, reduce exploitation and support conservation efforts.

This joint enforcement effort highlights the importance of working with other law enforcement agencies and partners to combat the illegal wildlife trade.
