"Last year, I was lucky to be a resident in the Department of Fine Arts at Mount Allison University in Sackville. This is where I first learned how to hand-set wood and lead type. 

At Centre[3], I'm building on this work and my interest in combining letterpress printing with archival materials. The work I'm doing uses news stories about the Canadian labour movement and reflects on the radical history of typesetting. I have been developing a method of typesetting and hand-cutting as a metaphor for the impacts of economic austerity, the loss of shared histories, and barriers to communication and understanding in contemporary workplaces.

Later in my residency, I will be digitally printing a series of photos and making an artist's book. I'm looking forward to what the weeks ahead will bring!"

Tara Bursey is an interdisciplinary artist, self-publisher and arts worker. She has worked as Curatorial Assistant at the Textile Museum of Canada and Artscape Youngplace, and in a curatorial capacity for the City of Hamilton Tourism and Culture Division, Hamilton Supercrawl, Craft Ontario, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Wychwood Barns Community Association.

Born in Scarborough, Ontario, Tara lives in Hamilton and serves as Executive Director of the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre , Canada’s only labour history museum and multidisciplinary art centre.
