It’s been exactly one year since I went to Morocco

One year since I tried to run away from my problems

One year since I got sick

I’ll never forget that night. It happened so fast

Within minutes of ingesting whatever caused the anaphylactic reaction I was screaming for medical help

My throat felt like it was closing, I was having trouble breathing, my heart was racing, I was dizzy, my hands and lips swelled up and I was terrified

For god sakes we were in AFRICA

Thankfully my friend and our tour guide got me to a pharmacy right away to get Benadryl

It happened on day 4 of 14 of our trip 😭

The whole rest of the time I was completely off. I was constantly dizzy, disoriented, was having allergic reactions to food so I basically only ate protein bars and then only chicken kabobs when those ran out

I’ve never been so scared in my life

I even tried to find a flight back home early and it was $4,500 ONE WAY

For 3 months after getting home I had dizziness, I was disoriented, I had pressure in my eyes and head, I couldn’t hold conversations, I couldn’t remember words, I couldn’t walk in a straight line, etc

It wasn’t until my eye doctor noticed that I had swelling in my optic nerves did I get sent to the ER. Even then I didn’t have the correct diagnosis. Doctors told me I had developed a neurological condition which thankfully wasn’t accurate.

After many doctors, many medications, a spinal tap and hours of testing the neuro opthlamologist told me I had viral meningitis and more than likely from a parasite

7 months after it happened I finally was free of those daily symptoms and I could attempt to heal. The anxiety the followed was equally as bad as the symptoms themselves

It wasn’t until very recently, almost a year later I started feeling more like myself again

It’s been one hell of a ride

Don’t ever take your health for granted
