## Caption

When you receive a new item for letterpress printing, you simply have to print it to see how it looks. That’s the case for a halftone Jared recently received as a gift from a colleague at the Sacramento History Museum. 

This halftone depicts Sutter’s Mill and includes the text, “Gen’l John A. Sutter’s saw mill at Coloma (on the American River) where gold was first discovered in California Jan. 18, 1848. By James W. Marshall.” 

It is historic items like this that make us at a museum wonder why that date was used. Confirmed by numerous firsthand accounts, James Marshall found gold on January 24, 1848 at Sutter’s Mill 40 east of present-day Sacramento. This would lead to the California Gold Rush. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful halftone to have considering how much we discuss the Gold Rush at the Museum. This was printed with black ink using our Washington hand press.
