This Clintonville school once had Columbus’ only school swimming pool 🏊

Built in 1915, the Crestview School opened on Columbus’ north side to accommodate a booming student population.

It briefly became known as “Clinton High”, but the very next year, its focus shifted to middle grades as “Crestview Junior High School", a name that would last for more than 60 years.

When it opened, it was the only school in Columbus with a swimming pool. Student use was lower than expected, and Depression-era budget cuts drained the pool in the 1930s. In the 1940s, students tried to bring it back, fundraising through cookie sales – but by the 1950s, the pool was ultimately tiled over to expand classroom and auditorium space.

In 1980, it became “Crestview Middle School”, operating for more than two decades before declining enrollment led to a major renovation.

In the mid-2000s, the upgraded building welcomed the Indianola Alternative Elementary, originally launched in 1975 as the city’s first designated alternative education program. The move allowed the school to expand from K-5 to K-8 services.

Today, Indianola Informal K-8 occupies the building as a 100% lottery placement school with visual arts, music, and dance at the heart of its curriculum.
