Pete Buttigieg, the out gay former US Transportation Secretary, took to his YouTube channel on 20 January to publicly criticize President Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland and the ‘unhinged’ message he sent to Norway over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

“The President sent an unhinged message to Norway, like, ‘take away the car keys’ level of crazy. [Trump said] because the Norwegian government didn’t give him the Nobel Peace Prize, the Danish government needs to give him Greenland, or else he will punish all of Europe. This isn’t just crazy and embarrassing, it is dangerous,” Buttigieg said.

Norway’s government shared Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre’s full written exchange with Donald Trump on Monday 19 January. Støre implored Trump to de-escalate his threats against allies for supporting Denmark amid the conflict over Trump’s desire to own Denmark’s territory, Greenland. 

Trump responded by writing “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America…. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

As reported by NPR, Norway’s government doesn’t award the Nobel Peace Prize. Since 1901, the awarding of the prize has been handled by a five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, which receives no direct input from the Norwegian government.
