Did you think Iowa was in for a mild winter? Think again. An extreme cold watch in Iowa spells out the dangerous conditions for the days ahead.

After nearly a week of temperatures around 40-50 degrees in Des Moines at the start of January, winter in central Iowa has seemingly returned. Highs in Des Moines have averaged around 18 degrees since Jan. 17, and elsewhere around the state, snowfall totals have exceeded 2.5 inches during that same time period.

The National Weather Service's hazardous weather outlook warns of wind, snow and extended low temperatures in Iowa over the coming days.
