How’s this for a fashion-forward move? Levi Strauss & Co. isn’t just launching a digital transformation, it’s also creating a future-ready workforce that can deliver on it. Partnering with consultancy Launchpad.ai, the denim manufacturing giant created an eight-week course to upskill its employees in all things digital. Featuring content and use cases specific to the apparel industry, it covers the foundations of data science, coding, machine learning, and agile.
 
The goal? Encourage employees—regardless of title, background, or skill level—to adopt a digital-first mindset. Considered the first of its kind in the industry, the project is helping prove how emerging technical concepts like AI and machine learning can be made accessible to all.
 
“No business can succeed if its workforce does not reflect the diversity of its consumers, and that’s especially crucial in technology in order to minimize bias of algorithms and digital products,” says Katia Walsh, levistraussco SVP and chief strategy and AI officer.
 
After completing the program, graduates apply their new citizen developer skills to solve problems in new ways: creating models to predict manufacturing defects or digitizing manual processes like color-matching threads. Graduates also collaborate on AI projects that become part of the larger Levi’s strategy and digital roadmap, Walsh says, strengthening ties—and knowledge transfer—across the company.
