Martin Luther King, Jr. believed strongly in the power of non-violent resistance, not to be confused with non-resistance. But during the civil rights movement there were other competing views to his.  In 1963 PBS brought together 3 monumental Black leaders, Dr. King, Malcom X, and James Baldwin, for an intimate and groundbreaking documentary conversation film, The Negro and the American Promise. In it, each outlines a vision with host and educator Dr. Kenneth Clark for how and what they belive should be accomplished for Black Americans. In this clip from the PBS archives, Dr. King answer a question addressing Malcom X’s criticism of his core belief system for protests and progress.
