Mattel has honored pioneering activist #OpalLee with a new Barbie doll, recognizing her as the “grandmother” of the Juneteenth movement. Lee is a key figure in the effort to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday.

Lee, a 99-year-old American activist and educator, advocated for and raised awareness about Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when African American slaves were informed of their freedom in Galveston, Texas.

In a statement, Lee said “It has been a joy to partner with Barbie on my Inspiring Women doll. I hope my story encourages the next generation never to underestimate the power of one voice. As I often say, one person can start a change, and that can change the world.” In 2024, Lee was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation’s highest civilian honor by former President #JoeBiden.
