“Welcome to the ‘mother of all airports’ – once the largest building on the planet. Berlin’s former Tempelhof Airport is a monumental structure that feels like a film set, frozen in time. Although flight operations ceased in 2008, the interior is surprisingly alive. Yet, compared to the usual sights, it often flies under the radar—for visitors and locals alike.
Step inside on a daily tour, and you’ll find that the layers of history are stunning. You can discover surreal spaces like a U.S. Air Force basketball court from the Cold War era, a ‘Hall of Honor’ hidden behind a false ceiling, massive hangars, endless corridors, and countless other architectural surprises.
But the building is constantly reinventing itself. Originally built between 1936 and 1941 for monumental self-staging (the roof was designed to hold 80,000 spectators for air shows!), it later became a symbol of freedom during the Berlin Airlift.
Today, this 307,000-square-meter giant serves as a spectacular stage for art, events, and society. The hangars have transformed into dramatic venues, while community events like the annual ‘Weihnachtssingen’ (Christmas Singing) bring the historic main hall back to life with music.
For a completely new perspective, check out the recently opened Tower THF with its roof terrace and exhibition. Standing there gives you a sense of the sheer scale of a site that has transformed from a closed fortress into an open place for everyone.

Pro-tip: Skip the standard tourist spots and book one of the specific guided tours at flughafentempelhof_thf, or check their website calendar for upcoming cultural highlights. Whether you’re looking for a dedicated photography tour, a journey into the underground bunkers, or deep historical insights, there is a slot waiting for you.” — CNT Local Creator berlinstagram
