Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 34 points to carry No. 21 Tennessee to an 85–71 victory over Texas on Tuesday night, dominating both ends of the court in the Volunteers’ SEC rebound.

Gillespie set the tone early, hitting 8 of 10 shots in the first half, including 3 of 4 from three-point range, finishing with 22 first-half points as Tennessee built a 48–33 halftime lead. J.P. Estrella added 11 points, while DeWayne Brown II and Jaylen Carey each chipped in 10, helping the Vols (11–4, 1–1 SEC) control the paint 44–18 and maintain consistency at the free-throw line, converting 21 of 29 attempts.

Texas (9–6, 0–2) was led by Tramon Mark with 20 points, Camden Heide with 16, and Simeon Wilcher with 10. Despite coming into the game averaging 88.6 points per game—its highest since 1994–95—the Longhorns struggled to counter Tennessee’s inside presence and first-half scoring burst from Gillespie.

The win also marked a milestone for Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes, as his 1,274th career game moved him past Bob Knight into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time wins list.

The Volunteers maintained their streak of being ranked in the poll for the 89th consecutive week, though their 66-week run in the Top 20 ended. Gillespie’s dominant performance ensured Tennessee bounced back strongly, holding the Longhorns well below their season scoring average.
