Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany over 300 years ago, with a name that literally means “badger dog” in German. Their long bodies and short legs made them ideal for digging into burrows and flushing out badgers and other ground-dwelling animals — combining bravery with a surprising amount of stamina for such small dogs.⁠
